‘pity this busy monster, manunkind’

One of the advantages of the study of literature is that is can provide the vocabulary for any contemporary miasma. One of e e cummings’ World War II poems describes Donald Trump perfectly: “the bigness of his littleness.” It goes on to speak of electronically deifying “one razorblade into a mountainrange,” which is the one real strength of contemporary American news media.

The poem is the one that ends, “listen: there’s a hell/of a good universe next door; let’s go.”
